LA County confirms first Wile Nile Virus death of the year – NBC Los Angeles
Public health officials confirmed Friday the first death of the year due to the West Nile Virus.
Officials said a San Fernando Valley resident was hospitalized after being infected by the mosquito-borne disease and then died from neurological illness.
“This tragic loss highlights the serious health risks posed by mosquito-borne diseases, such as West Nile virus, dengue, and others,” said Muntu Davis, Los Angeles County Health Officer.
Health officials say the West Nile virus spreads through the bite of an infected mosquito. Some symptoms may include fever, muscle aches, and tiredness. People over 50 with health problems are at greater risk of serious illnesses, such as meningitis, encephalitis and limb paralysis.
Davis said people can take steps to reduce the risk of mosquito-borne diseases:
- Use insect repellant
- Eliminate items that hold standing water
- Use and fix screens on doors and windows
West Nile virus spreads during warm weather months when mosquitoes are most active. While not all mosquitoes carry this virus, the type of mosquito that spreads this virus is found throughout Los Angeles County.
Health experts say the West Nile virus spreads mostly during warm weather months when mosquitos are known to be most active and even though not all mosquitos are virus carriers the mosquito can be found throughout Los Angeles County.
So far this year, a total of 14 cases have been documented in Los Angeles County, not including Long Beach and Pasadena who have their local health department reports their cases.

Security guard stabbed inside Metrolink train headed to Lancaster – NBC Los Angeles
Authorities are investigating a stabbing of a security guard inside a Metrolink train near Acton on Sunday night, police said.
The stabbing happened around 9:30 p.m. just before arriving at the Acton Metrolink station.
The security guard was able to subdue the suspect with pepper spray and the help of the doctor.
Deputies made an arrest and the Antelope Valley 285 Train departed en route to its destination in Lancaster.
The security guard was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Man dead after fatal stabbing in Beverly Hills – NBC Los Angeles
Police are investigating the events that led up to a fatal stabbing Saturday in Beverly Hills.
Detectives say initial reports indicate there was a confrontation between two men near the intersection of Spalding Drive and Charleville Boulevard.
A witness who asked not to be identified tells NBC4 that the injured man police arrested allegedly tried assaulting a father with a little girl near that same intersection.
“He had a baby in his arm and being attacked by an assailant was clearly a situation that we couldn’t just drive away from, so we pulled up right in front of them,” said the witness, who intervened. “He was not present, he was having some kind of psychotic break, and so it was kind of scary.”
The witness says as soon as he pulled over his son jumped out to help the father and child – he then saw the man with a deep cut on his face turn his attention to his car and said he tried grabbing his dog.
“I reached back, grabbed her, and then was pulling her back, but he wouldn’t let go, so I was pulling her, he was pulling her, and then I started punching him because I was yelling at him to get out of my car.”
The witness says during this time his car slowly rolled into a yard on Spalding– and saw the injured man stumble away towards a nearby home. He added that he did not see how the fatal stabbing happened.
The man with the stab wound was taken to a hospital where he later died, according to authorities.
Police have not released the identity of that man and say the other person involved in the confrontation is cooperating with investigators.
