After a flurry of interest at the CES 2024, preorders for a second run of the $199 Large Action Model R1 handheld AI have been opened.

AI startup Rabbit has developed a consumer AI system called r1, which runs on a “revolutionary natural-language” operating system.

Every year, smartphones become more complex. It can be difficult to know what to do and where to go.

Jesse Lyu was frustrated by the fact that we had to use a different application each time we wanted to do something on our smartphones. He created a device to manage your apps. Imagine it as a voice assistant, but more advanced. The company claims that, for instance, you will be able to book tickets without using any apps.

“When we started building r1, we said internally that we’d be happy if we sold 500 devices on launch day,” Rabbit writes. “In 24 hours, we already beat that by 20x!”

This LAM was designed to allow AI systems to see and act the same as humans, eliminating the need to use and download multiple apps.

The R1 will memorize this command and store it in its ‘rabbit’ list. You’ll need to speak into the far-field microphone and press the push-to-talk feature next time you book a Lyft.

Rabbit’s site still allows you to preorder R1 devices even though the first batch has sold out. Rabbit expects delivery between April and May 2024.

It consolidates many of your services onto a single device, so you don’t have to switch between apps or enter login information constantly.

You could tell the R1 that you wanted to book a Lyft to take you from your home to your office, and it’d do so instantly.

The r1 focuses on using technology intuitively. This magic box costs $199. You can pre-order and you should expect to receive the device by late March 2024.

If you placed an order before the initial round of devices sold out, then expect to receive your device in March.
