Street takeovers end with cars set on fire in two areas of Los Angeles – NBC Los Angeles

Two illegal street takeovers early Tuesday morning ended with two cars set on fire and left a nearby car dealership vandalized in two different areas of Los Angeles.

One of the incidents occurred at the intersection of Jefferson Boulevard and Figueroa Street, in Exposition Park, around 3:20 a.m., according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

After making several dangerous maneuvers at the intersection, they proceeded to set the vehicle on fire and break the window of a car dealership located on that corner.

The crowd dispersed when police arrived and no arrests were reported.

“It’s definitely frustrating, it’s very disheartening,” said Jason Chichon, who works at Felix Chevrolet dealership, which was impacted by the takeover.

“Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time something like this has happened at this intersection,” Chichon said. “This is the first time we’re been vandalized. Tt’s very unfortunate for us. We have been serving the community for over 100 years.”

Another street takeover reported a little earlier in South Los Angeles, ended with the vehicle of one of the participants set on fire.

The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m., at the intersection of Florence and Normandie Avenues. Firefighters found the car on fire and were able to extinguish the blaze within minutes.

“Let’s face it  — we’ve seen a number of these in the past where these cars were set on fire intentionally,” said LAPD Commander Craig Valenzuela, who leads the department’s Street Racing Task Force. “I’m most worried because these are becoming more violent. The exhibition of burned cars – and takeovers and looting of stores – these are not just street takeovers where folks are spinning and doing doughnuts and dispersing.”

No arrests or injuries were reported in the incident.

Shohei Ohtani hits NL-leading 4th homer in Dodgers 3-1 loss to Guardians – NBC Los Angeles

Matthew Boyd outdueled Landon Knack over five scoreless innings, Andrés Giménez hit a two-run homer in the sixth and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-1 on Friday night in a matchup of division leaders.

The NL West-leading Dodgers managed just two baserunners through five innings. Mookie Betts doubled in the first when Boyd hit Teoscar Hernández in the left foot.

Shohei Ohtani went deep in bottom of the sixth for his 45th home run and 100th RBI of the season that left the Dodgers trailing 2-1.

The Dodgers loaded the bases with one out in the eighth. Ohtani singled, Betts doubled and Freddie Freeman was intentionally walked by reliever Hunter Gaddis. Chris Taylor, who had replaced Hernández, grounded into a double play to end the threat.

Boyd (2-1) allowed one run and three hits in six innings. The left-hander struck out six and walked none.

Emmanuel Clase retired the side in the ninth to earn his 42nd save.

Los Angeles is getting a new area code – NBC Los Angeles

New phone service customers within the 213 and 323 area code region of Los Angeles may be assigned to the new 738 area code, Spectrum announced Friday.

The affected neighborhoods include downtown Los Angeles, Alhambra, Bell, Bell Gardens, Beverly Hills, Commerce, Cudahy, Glendale, Hawthorne, Huntington Park, Inglewood, Lynwood, Maywood, Montebello, Monterey Park, Pasadena, Rosemead, South Gate, South Pasadena, Vernon, West Hollywood, and unincorporated portions of Los Angeles County, according to the company.

“The new 738 area code will serve the same geographic area currently served by the 213 and 323 area codes,” Spectrum said on its website.

Those with the new area code will still have to dial 1 and 10 digits when making all local calls, including the 738 numbers.

Those with the existing phone services in the 213 and 323 areas will not be affected as the price of a call, coverage area and other rates and services will remain the same, according to Spectrum.

Those with questions regarding the information can call Spectrum at  (855) 707 – 7328 and visit the California Public Utilities Commission’s website for more information.
